Explosion safety for silos
Silos are critical components in terms of Explosion Safety. Many different ignition sources such as hot surfaces, electrical equipment, static electricity build up and discharge, spark emission through metallic foreign bodies during pneumatic filling, or even through the purely self-ignition of a biologically active bulk will increase the risk of an explosion.
If all potential combustion sources cannot be excluded, the silos must be constructively protected. Either through explosion venting by means of explosion vents such as the EGV in silos outside of buildings, or through flameless venting via Q-Box / Q-Rohr®® or explosion suppression (Q-Bic™) within buildings.
For the processing of foodstuffs or pharmaceutical substances we can offer you the quench valve for the decoupling in a hygienic version. For hygienically demanding processes, the EHEDG certified explosion vent EGV HYP and the Q-Rohr® in combination with the hygienic explosion vent ERO are available to relieve pressure.
Depending on which material you are processing, preventive measures can also be implemented. For example, radio detectors in combination with remote controlled extinguishers or quench valves as a preventive safety measure that can prevent the introduction of ignition sources in silos. However, the omission of constructive measures is a special case – our experts offer you consulting in this case.
The overall picture counts:
The protection of individual system components is only as good as the protection of the entire system. Pay particular attention to having sufficient decoupling devices, and the protection against “over engineering”. Only if the entire system is observed, and the individual protective measures are aligned to each other, will your Explosion Safety concept be safe AND economic.
